Eberron: At World's End (Xen'Drik Pirates)

30.10.2013: Capture

Everyone assembled at Kleris’s place, except for Shynt’tree who had decided to part ways with Daemon for the time being since their pursuers would follow him. Daemon was questioned about his wounds and bloody clothes but he avoided revealing the real reason behind them. However, in the dark of the night, Kleris awoke to the steps of two men sneaking on Daemon with drawn weapons. He blasted them with cold, instantly freezing their blood and brains and slaughtering them before they hit the floor and shattered. The noise woke Araen from his meditation as well as Daemon from his sleep. They searched the bodies and found a bag and a longbow waiting outside. Within the bag, they found Shynt’tree’s belongings as well as her head. Before dawn, Kleris threw the bodies of the Scars to the river for the Sahuagin to eat and buried what was left of Shynt’tree. Their belongings were distributed among the remaining party members. Surplus weapons were sold and the vials of poison they had been carried were identified by an alchemist, and the all the Drow poison was traded for a healing potion and a tanglefoot bag.

Afterwards, the party rendezvoused with Ahab and his lickspittles by the remains of the Leaky Dinghy. They further discussed the details of the plan and decided to strike at dusk when two of the Goblins would distract the Warforged by setting fire to the wooden warehouses closest to the piers. They were armed with oil and alchemist’s fire for the job. Ahab and the members of the party were turned invisible while the rest of the Goblins waited in hiding.

The battle with the Warforged was intense and over quickly. Both Kleris and Araen blasted the Warforged on deck with lightning, drastically reducing their numbers. Ahab managed to harpoon the captain, dropping her, but not before she had ordered her men to retreat by jumping off the ship. One full squadron managed to escape before the rest were slaughtered by repeated bursts of deadly magic. Daemon boarded the ship but dropped the ladders, forcing him to search for another way to allow the rest to board the ship. Before the squadron which had left to investigate the fires managed to return, alerted by the shouts and flashes of lightning, they had left the harbor behind with the help of favorable winds conjured by Araen.

Once safe, they sent Kleris and two Goblins to fetch the remaining Goblins, Menna and fresh water on a rowing boat. However, they were spotted by the members of the Iron Watch before entering Stormreach and forced to escape and land elsewhere. Kleris went to fetch the Goblins from the Leaky Dinghy’s ruins, learning that they had become small time pyromaniacs. He instructed about the boat’s whereabouts before leaving for Menna. On his way, the Warforged spotted the psion, forcing him to turn himself invisible. After he had found Menna in the Wayward Lobster, he bought three barrels of fresh water and had it carried to where the boat was. The workers were paid extra to seal their mouths.

Once everyone and everything was finally on board the Piquet, Captain Ahab decided that they would sail for Three Barrel Cove to recruit certain acquaintances of his as well as to learn about any suitable shipments to rob.

18.10.2013: Encounters

The party entered the Leaky Dinghy, led by Daemon, despite their worries over Bugbear Captain Ahab the Rancourous’s mood. They encountered a sight of Ahab skewering a Sahuagin while his crew was swarming another one. The Bugbear demanded that Fuddok, the tavern owner, cook the sea devil for him. Daemon began conversing with the good captain, mentioning his trouble with certain Warforged. This reminder about his enemies made the Bugbear seethe, but he was willing to listen to Daemon since the would-be pirate implied that he had a plan to retrieve Ahab’s ship, Piquet. However, since the initial plan was merely to enter the ship by force and sail away with it (something Ahab had considered himself), the Bugbear became suspicious. He shared his knowledge about the Iron Watch guarding his ship day and night with the strength of multiple patrols. If they were to storm it, he would need evidence. The participation of a somewhat Drow woman, another Elf and some book worm did not exactly fill him with confidence.

Shynt’tree conjured a silent image of a Warforged for illustrative purposes. The mere sight was enough to enrage Ahab further, and Daemon finally realized that he should begin showing off before the eruption. He charged the wall, attempting to look as intimidating as possible. A sad attempt, that, and it merely made Captain Ahab amused by the would-be pirate’s incompetence. Arael attempted to salvage the situation by casting a spell, causing winds to blow strong enough to send Ahab’s Goblin crew flying. However, the sudden gust also caused the Leaky Dinghy to collapse. Spittoon-Fuddok’s foot was caught under a pair of planks but everyone escaped mostly unscathed. Roaring with laughter, Ahab decided to accept the party’s business proposal. He suggested they moved elsewhere, to the Wayward Lobster, to polish their crude little plan.

In the Wayward Lobster, everyone’s attention was captured by Menna, Enilam and Stormrage. Daemon, in particular, was enthralled by Menna’s animated tattoos and approached the Dwarven woman to inquire about the parlor and pricing. Menna let him know that they had been done by none other than herself, and informed the thug about her prices. Daemon decided to have himself tattooed with one and borrowed the money from Shynt’tree who joined Menna and him in order to recruit the Dwarf while she was tattooing Daemon’s arm.

Araen approached Enilam instead, noting his Valenar attire. Enilam made clear that he would prefer to leave port as soon as possible due to his entanglement with the Storm Lords’ less than honorable businesses. However, Araen’s formulation of their plans made it clear to the paladin that they were also a threat to innocent people, and he took a slash at the wizard. Araen managed to turn invisible before being downed, but he preferred to pay back eye for an eye and launched a bolt of lightning at his half-kin once out of the latter’s immediate perimeter. Thus revealing himself, he was swiftly felled by the charging half-Valenar who was forced to retreat once Kleris and Ahab joined the fray. Ahab had missed him with his harpoon and pierced the head of a bystander whose accomplices he intimidated to clean the mess.

Stormrage had noted the power of these strangers and would approach Kleris once Enilam had fled. However, his drunken mumbling about spirits and fate and whatnot was nigh impossible to comprehend. The Orc presented his divine powers by healing Kleris with his touch. He then proceeded to challenge Kleris in order to find out whether or not the spirits wanted him to accompany them. After one swing at the Synad, it became clear that the latter would not wrestle with him, and Stormrage decided to leave and sober up. The baffled psion was thus left to his machinations.

Meanwhile, Menna had agreed to sail with the party once they had received a ship. After all, she could use the gold to lure Dwarven suitors necessary for the revival of her clan. She would wait for them in the Wayward Lobster since she kept shop in the tavern in any case.

The party went through their plans and agreed with Ahab and his crew on bringing only enough Goblins along the boarding crew to sail the ship from port. The rest would act as a distraction for the Warforged patrolling the perimeter of Piquet. Unbeknownst to the Bugbear, they had also agreed to rid of him once an opportunity would present itself.

Ahab left, leaving his lickspittles behind to act as a line of communication between the party and him. The rest also scattered, Shynt’tree and Daemon following some leads from Daemon’s old Scars informants. They were ambushed by a pair of Scars enforcers in a shoemaker’s shop and forced to fight for their lives. Shynt’tree’s conjured grease bought them time the time necessary to collapse a shelf and flee, although Daemon had been badly wounded by then.

A tattoo-addicted legbreaker and racketeer of the Halo of Scars gang in Southwatch. He specializes in intimidation, and his running kill count on his arm acts as a fine remainder of what he can do with his weapon. The idea to leave the slums of Southwatch behind for good was originally his.

Kleris Jurians:

Having studied under the tutelage of his parents, Kleris is a capable psion, and a childhood friend of the troupe. He openly displays his power by mounting his psi-crystal atop a crude staff, and his wide-brimmed hat is true to his secret heritage.

Araen Tairil:
Sun Elf (Valenar) Wiz5
Araen has studied the ways of a wizard and a witch of the sea under the tutelage of sea witch aboard a certain vessel. He often remains silent but the Valenar heritage in his veins demands that he show his superiority and unerringness whenever an opportunity rises its head.

Shynt’tree:
Half-Drow HEPar2;Brd1;HuPar2
Shynt’tree is a Half-Drow and as such, a pariah in the eyes of both her parent races. She specializes in cursing and otherwise hindering the enemy as well as manipulating the people the party encounters to open certain doors. She has sailed on the same ship as Araen for the last few years. Shynt’tree always has the last word.

Session:

The session began with Shynt’tree and Araen having informed their childhood friends in Southwatch of their arrival in Stormreach and having asked them to assemble in the Black Freighter to welcome them back. The rest are waiting for them to arrive in the tar-soaked kip, while the elfbloods waste time bickering on their way through Graystone.

Once they finally arrive, the old devil Captain Smargat greets them with a stream of insults, notably calling Araen a bitch. Shynt’tree answers him in kind, resulting in surprising “reveals” about their previous encounters. Araen decides to prove his masculinity by ordering the strongest thing the Freighter has to offer – and soon regrets his poor choice of words as Captain Smargat hands him a revolting pint of Orc Kragg. Some haggling ensues since the draught is sickeningly expensive to boot. In the end, Araen is able to sip a taste of the nauseating liquid before letting it go, much to the appreciation of a wandering Half-Orc which takes a deep sniff out of the mug, gulps it down in one go and thanks the Elf.

The party members begin gossiping, and a few of then overhear a customer mention Captain Slag being in town to Captain Smargat. They realize many of the implications but let it be for the time being. Daemon brings his plan to the table but they decide to think it over and meet again the next day.

Shynt’tree explores her childhood home, and everything remains the same. She realizes that some nomad Giants must be visiting the Tents since they are holding a bonfire but decides to stay away since she has no business with them. Araen sleeps in an inn. Daemon asks around for clues regarding Captain Slag, and learns that he is staying in the Rusty Nail in Forgelight.

The next day, they decide to go explore the harbor. Daemon has to inform his superiors in the Scars gang (Halo of Scars) about his second thoughts regarding membership, although he intends to present this as a business opportunity to his superior, Whiskers. Kleris asks around only to learn that the Wayward Lobster might have some scoundrels to form a crew. Shynt’tree and Araen form a combo, and they learn most of the gossip going around in the harbor, and much more. The elfbloods are informed of Captain Ahab’s situation and all the details pertaining to it. They also learn about the Underharbor, and about the existence of the entry under the statue’s head.

Meanwhile, Daemon requests an appointment with Whiskers, his superior. Whiskers is a Shifter lady who is known for her timidity to grasp new opportunities. Daemon draws the cross with an extra horizontal line (stylized whiskers) in the right alley with his blood, and withdraws to await for an answer. After some time, a Halfling disguised as a Human child brings word to him, telling him to meet him under the Southwatch bridge over Koronoo river. He eats the message and heads to the meeting place at the appointed time.

An invisible Whiskers inquires him about the reason for wanting to meet her. Daemon explains his plan, which is received with suspicion. Whiskers does not want Daemon and his non-member friends to screw up when Daemon can probably be tracked back to the Scars due to his marking (a ring of scar tissue around his pinky, the trademark of the Halo of Scars gang). Eventually, Daemon simply goes with his plan B by announcing his resignation by cutting off his scarred pinky. Whiskers is not exactly delighted with this, and before backing off, she warns Daemon not to have his face eaten by the Sahuagin (ensuring that he can not be traced back to the Scars). This leaves the racketeer uneasy but he meets up with his friends nevertheless.

They decide to investigate Captain Ahab the Rancorous’s case. Basically they want ownership of his caravel, and preferably his Goblin crew and magical hat as well. As they approach the pitiful kip known as Leaky Dinghy, they are appalled by the smell of the place and unnerved by its creaking. As they step to the doorway, a thundering roar shakes the place.
